I have been searching websites and brick and morter stores for things that should go in my kit for a predator hunt. I have found more gear than you can shake a stick at. The problem is since I have no hunting experience I don't what I actually need and don't need.
So if you have three categories labeled:
1) Must have 2) nice to have 3) bullshit marketed to newbs that has no business in the field.
What category would you put a gillie suit and why. I posted this question on another predator forum. I want to post it here as well.

Jarhead Ron,
Must have, Gun and ammo Nice to have, Camo clothing, face mask, Hat and gloves. Some kind of predator call. Sharp knife (maybe)
Bullshit marketed to newbies, Everything else.
If I need anything else, it's in the truck about a hundred yards away.

Like Dave said...
1. Rifle, ammo, knife 2. calling equipment, hand calls work fine. 3. Maps are nice to have. 4. Hunting license comes in handy at times. 5. Camo helps 6. stool or chair is real nice to have 7.

A lot depends on where you hunt. A full on guillie suit is hell here with fences and mesquite. I prefer having leafy camo only on top so I can actually get to a stand without being ensnared in something or other.
The same thing goes for calling gear, but for me the basics are:
- Something to sit on. Preferably something that can carry the rest of your shit. I use one of those Cabelas 50cal size ammo cans. Ive seen guys use buckets and other similar things.
- Calls. Mouth and electronic.
- Gun and ammo
- Spare ammo and batteries
- Camo. Like I said I just have a thin (t-shirt material) leafy top with a hood, face mask and gloves. I also usually wear a ball cap when calling.
Other handy items I toss in the box are multiple dog ties/leashes, since I hunt with dogs sometimes or friends that run dogs. They also make good coyote carriers. A laser rangefinder for zapping the range after you knocked something down. Also makes a good monocular for peeking at things when you don't want to point your rifle to look through the scope. Duct tape, razor blades, a pile of "extra" ammo in assorted calibers and chamberings, spare face mask, spare gloves and various other little things.
That's why I like having a seat I can carry things in. Less chance of leaving something behind, more compact to get to a stand, and every time you go out to a stand and think "Shit. I forgot X." or "I wish I had Y." you just add it to the box at the next opportunity and you won't do that again. It's hard to make a definitive list of what goes in there, but the more you hunt and hunt with other folks the list fills itself out.

A slightly different spin since I’m more likely to be shooting with a camera than a gun. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to handle both on a calling stand.
I wear a small back pack that contains: video camera, small digital still camera, Fox Pro caller, assorted hand calls, glasses, matches in a match safe and fire starter. A tripod gets slung over my shoulder on a carry strap. A dog leash is usually in my hand with the other end attached to a dog.
Nice to have: a folding stool to sit on. Not only is it appreciated when the ground is wet or has snow cover, but I can do a better job of handling and panning the tripod mounted video camera than when sitting on the ground.
Anything else I think I might need is in the truck.
-------------------- If you can't do it with a dog, it probably ain't worth doin' anyway.

Speaking of "stuff in the truck", don't ask Dary what he carries to the hunt in his truck.
I sincerely believe that if the need arose to rebuild a space shuttle engine Dary would have the materials and all tools needed stashed somewhere, very neatly bu the way, in his truck.
Believe me, we don't have the bandwidth to list it all.

For once a sailor got strait to the point. I still have some old cammies from active duty days I can stll fit in. I'll just use those since I don't care about messing them up. I have an old boonie cover to keep the sun out of my eyes. I'll throw everything I need in an old alice pack then have at it.
