I have been using my .17 Remington for several years. It shoots excellent, but unfortunately I live in California and hunt sometimes in the new lead free condor zone.
I suspect it's going to be a while before we see non lead ammo produced for the .17. I called several ammo manufactures. Nothing yet.
So, maybe an excuse to buy a new gun. I'm thinking the 204 or a 22 250.
I salvage the fur, so that's why I like the .17.
Suggestions on caliber and rifle manufactures???
Thanks,
Al

AHV,
ALL of the major and most of the minor manufacturers of rifles chamber in .204 Ruger and .22-250, take your pick.
If you have not already considered it I suggest you check out the Calhoon website and consider either the 19 calhoon or the 19 Badger. I have friends that shoot these for called coyotes and are impressed by the lethality and the fur friendliness of the cartridges.
If you stick to your first choices I would recommend the .204 over the .22-250 for called coyotes under 150 yards. I would recommend a cz 527 in the "American" sporter barrel contour as an almost ideal calling rifle.

Moon Dog,
Thanks for your reply. I talked to Calhoon and unfortunetely the .19 is not going to help my non lead challenge. He suggested the .204 as the next best solution.
Thanks,
Al

Well,
There you go, I guess I dropped the line of your post about non lead bullets.
California is a pretty good size market, I can't believe that Remington/Winchester/Hornady, et al won;t bring out a suitable choice in non lead bullets.
Might have to use a slower velocity load to keep it in bounds of fur friendly.

All that I spoke with say they are working on it, but of course they will start with the most popular calibers.
Barnes makes a 26 grain VG that I can use for the .204. Remington came out with a new model 7 predator that weighs only 7 lbs, and all my Remington rifles shoot great, so I'll probably go that route for now.
The info I read on the Calhoon Badger sounds very interesting and I may pick one up later.
Thanks Again,
Al

You may be right about no lead free .17 bullets, so I'll use it when I hunt in Arizona!

If it were me I'd ask the game and fish dept if a ".172 caliber 25gr Berger non-MEF bullet" satisfied the requirements of the lead free zone. You might get lucky and get the right goober over there that will read "non-MEF" and since they don't know what that means, give you the go ahead. Then just carry that paper in your pocket and shoot 'em up.

Hell mark, now you know better'n that. The California Department of Game and Fish is located in the broom closet of the PETA headquarters. One pimple-faced anorexic pre-pubescent teenager (who has watched "Bambi" 4,000 times) runs the whole show.
Ok, maybe not, but some of their policies sure seem that way.

Barnes makes a 37 grain non lead 22 cal bullet I have been using in my triple duece for some time. It is very fur friendly and more than accurate enough for called coyotes. Although I live in Arizona I, like you, hunt with a friend in Calif. so I developed a load with this bullet to meet any requirments we might face. I did not use this bullet on prairie dogs this year in my 22-250 but would feel confortable if I had to although I think it would shorten my effective range somewhat.
