Hello everyone,
Havent posted in quite some time, I moved to Lincoln since graduation and there just isnt too much ground here that isnt leased out. On a good note, during archery and rifle deer I made it back to our ground in south central nebraska to discover predators in abundance! I had a big tom bobcat walk litterally around me down a fence line at about 10 feet! He is a very unusual bobcat; almost black sort of the color of a chocolate lab with hardly any spots. He is probibly at least 35 lbs. I saw this bobcat many many times. He seems to hang out around one of my stands. I think he will be easy enough to get come dec 1 since he likes to follow me in and out of my stand. He seems to be a day hunter since I usually see him in the mid morning to early afternoon. When I stop to look back at him he simply sits down and stares at me. He is usually only 30 yards or less, VERY tempting. I also had him watch me walk-out the woods last sunday for a deer drive for a friend. He just jumped into a big cottonwood and watched me. I then discovered a den when a smaller female bobcat flushed from an old dead tree about a 1/4 mile from where the male lives. I watched her leave and about 5 minutes later two kittens started playing in front of the log. Now isnt it a little late for kittens? These two were about half the size of a house cat or less. Maybe only 2 months old. I plan on trying to take that big male over christmas. I think I will leave the female alone since she has kittens and they will be there for next year.

Hey Perth, Where are you from in South Central NE? I am from Kearney originally. I don't make it back too often to hunt anymore now that I am in SD. I did get back there over Thanksgiving and called some coyotes up around Loup City. By the way I used to live in Lincoln for a short while as well.

I was born in Holdrege but then moved to Hastings in 7th grade then back to Holdrege after high school. I graduated from UNK last fall. Most of the ground I hunt is in Harlan and Franklin county. I put up two trail cams over thanksgiving on some of the trails that seem to go to the den. I didnt go too close so that she wouldnt move them. Headed down this Saturday to try for that Tom. I will hopefully have some pictures to post then!

Well Sunday morning proved to be that tom's undoing! We drove down after a disappointing loss by the Huskers Saturday night and stayed at my grandparents. We both overslept, ( my roomate Dillon and I ) making it into the woods about 9:30. He had a muzzle loader tag so he got set up and I headed to a place to call about a quater mile away. About half way there I looked down toward an old dry pond that the beaver had done a number on a few years back and spotted something that appeared to resemble a bobcat sitting on one of those logs about one hundred yards out. I walked up to the fence line and used the post as a rest to try and verify that this was a bobcat. After a minute or so of staring at the thing I decided that it was just wishfull thinking and was about to look away when the figment of my imagination turned its head. Now I have thought that many an tree or clump of dirt were something else but never have those items turned a head. I debated what to do next since between me and this bobcat was only about 70 yards after I crawled down the fence line. I thought about calling but there was heavy grass between the tom and I and I didnt want to loose him in the many cattle paths. So I took a deep breath, made a little lip squeek, he turned toward me and I dropped him in his tracks with a single shot from my .223 in the chest ( which did not exit leaving little damage ). I have yet to get some pictures posted but will hopefully get to it this week. I had a friend who is a taxidermist look at the tom and he said that he thinks it is around 40 lbs. I will know for sure when I tag it this week. My friend did see some deer but nothing he wanted to shoot, and in all the excitement of taking this bobcat we forgot to even pull our trailcams to see what has been in the area!

Not too many spots. He is mostly dark brown with a few spots starting close to his belly.

Looks nice. I'm still waiting on my bobcat rug, the taxidermist is supposed to leave the head and feet on it.

I need to come to Missouri and shoot some cats with you Dan they are protected in my retarded backward state. I have a buddy up in Hannibal that sits on about 1300 acres, there should be a few up there.

Sure, Give me a holler, come this winter. I usually hunt a little bit north of Hanibal. There are some cats and coyotes up there.

Dave, Your welcome back to the "show-me" state too, When you get to the state line, just tell them "Dan said it was OK" and they will let you in.
Don't bring your Phalanx (CIWS) system Dan Carey is building for you. I'd still like to see you actually shoot a coyote...
