I am looking into getting another PC. I have XP Pro on this one and would prefer to keep it over the newer OS, Vista. Do I have to buy another Operating system or can I just instal my XP Pro on the new PC?

My understanding of copyright laws is that software is for one computer, unless you buy a license for the extra computer. Larger companies / schools usually buy multiple licenses for the same disc, rather than buying many discs and trying to remember which one goes with each computer.
That said, I'm pretty sure there are people out there that use the same OS disc on more then one computer without buying the extra license. One computer shop here in SV, from what I understand, was selling computers with Windows XP Pro on them, all using the same disc.
Microsoft caught 'em, and they're no longer in business.
Too bad, too. They were one of the more knowledgable computer repair places here.

Dan:
Kind of depends on where you buy the computer. I just bought a new Dell with XP Pro included at no extra charge. It was my choice, Vista or XP. But MS is forcing most of the big "assemblers" to code their pre-installed OS so it only works on the one computer. It didn't use to be that way, so if you have an earlier computer that came with the OS system disks, you may be OK. I have a circa 2002 Gateway with XP Pro, and I think the disks would have worked. But since I bought from Dell, they furnish the OS of my choice, so why not?

I've been thinking of getting another Dell. I am currently using one. This one came with Win 98, so it's a couple of years old. I bought XP from one of those chain stores and installed it about two years ago. So I still have the box and numbers and all that stuff, I think....

You should be good then. You may have to download Service Pack 2 if you have a real old version.
I can't believe you're still getting by with Windows 98. That was the most unstable POS to ever come down the pipe, and I tried to run it on a laptop (even worse). Windows 2000 was much better, but I skipped that one and went to XP which has been very solid. Vista I fear suffers much the same fate as 98; I hear nothing good about it from the business users.

Well I bought Win ME and installed it, but didn't like it and put Win 98 SE back in. Then when i had a hard time finding support for it, I bought XP and here I am. I'm running XP now and like it alright.

Dan I just got a couple quotes from Dell yesterday on a laptop for my home. I ditched my land line an plan on getting hi speed internet at home. Kind of breaking out of the sticks. I imagine it will be a debit card next. They informed me Vista is the new wave. Im half-assed use to XP. Don't really want to change but it was a sizeable cost to get XP. At the end of the month, all Dell computers will come standard with Vista, says Elijah from Dell.
I need to start online dating, girlfriend and I parted ways. She kind of got down on me. Says I should not subscribe to PlayBoy, I shill live a bachlor life and my dog comes before her. I did not have much to say in defence. She had me on the last point. I do believe I got out of their, in just the nick of time.

Jimmy:
Congratulations on your new found freedom.
Ken just informed me that Microsoft has extended the "drop dead date" for XP, at least for the Home edition. Dell may be another matter. I just took delivery of a new desktop from Dell loaded with XP Pro. I would counsel that you avoid Vista if at all possible. If need be, I'd purchase a separate copy of Windows XP from a software supplier, and replace Vista if that's all you can get. Laptops of course are more problematical; everything is more difficult and more expensive on a Laptop.
Ken informs me that the "new wave" among the business pros is to buy a loaded desktop with all the bells and whistles, and then get a stripped down laptop as economically as possible to carry just what you need for portability and business. They're working very hard now to develop laptops in the $200-$400 range. That way, if you drop it, lose it, or some airport security hack screws with it, you're not out much.
Just my opinion. Good luck.

Mike, I really did not want that freedom. Visited with her last nite and she informed me I was not the only problem in the realtionship. She had cheated on me two days before I took her to AZ in early March for her final spring break. I guess a local "sheephead" seen opportunity in here drunken state while I attended a WTF banquit out of town. That confirmed the "Good Ridence" feeling I have.
Im going to visit a Best Buy and our local computer store to gather more information on a PC. I will stay away from vista, I had others express the same feeling for that program. Dell had some high quotes, $1500-2200 for a tuned up laptop. I dont know enough about computers yet to even justify any thing like that. I will report back monday. Jimmy

Ordered a VX II Leopold 3x9x40 and Tally rings for the rifle I got from Moondog. Chris is assembling it and toting her over to me on TR. Will see first hand on the performance of the new tube Chris and Matt put together on his savage. Then a weekend of walleye fishing on Lake Oahe. Hope the weather holds, should be a great time. Probably have a question or two about computers on Monday.
Thanks

Mikes Birthday was the 5th, I was a day late and I dollar short thats PAR.
Happy Birthday to you too<g> It sounds like you have good plans to get away for a bit - I wish I did
Best Buy seems really pricey for what you get. Don't buy XP there for sure, I think they were charging $199 which is insane. Not knowing what your looking for but try mail (web) order at newegg or mwave and look in the 5 to 8 hundred dollar range, dell has that price range also on their site.
You can call me if you like, numbers five 4 one eight 15 nine 2 oh one.

I ordered up an Asus EeePC. $300 for the little thing. Solid state hard drive, 7" screen, linux installed... perfect for email, web and command line work. Which is most of my work anymore. Certainly won't replace my Macbook. It's more like a big PDA.
Personally, if I was looking at a new computer just to screw around on the web, email, office work (spreadsheets, documents, presentations, etc) I'd find a refurbished HP laptop, stick Ubuntu or Fedora on it and be done. Only reason I'd use a desktop is as a server or if I was into games. Gaming is the only reason I'd use Windows too and I don't do that, so I have no need for it at all.
Actually I do run XP in a VM when I'm forced to test something in Internet Explorer. at least then when it crashed it only takes out the VM.
Laptops are cheap if you get last year's model or refurbished deals. For most folks those are more than adequate. It doesn't take 4 gigs of RAM and duel core processors to run a word processor or look at porn on the web. For around $600-$800 you can find a dandy laptop and unless you make money using one there's no reason to spend more.

Oh and I wouldn't pay more than $5 for a Dell. OK, maybe $10 if the sales girl was cute.

Ok, So what should I get for my very first in home computer? I intend to do some emails, net surfing, spreadsheets and possibly some type of farm record keeping program.
I've only messed with Microsoft so far and understand Excel very well.
So tell me what I should get.

Dan asked me that in an email a while back. Here was my reply. Some of the links might be old.
----
My company used Dell for quite a while. Then a few years back we got a new batch of computers (we upgrade every 2 years) and the new stuff was junk. Tons of problems. It's like their QC went to pot. There's always a chance of getting a lemon, but this was a high percentage. Enough to make my company switch manufacturers. They went with HP. I've had some HP machines myself as well and if I was picking a major brand, that's who I would go with.
Really the best deals are clearance models. It's like most anything else. The new stuff comes out and they slash the prices on the old stuff. Truth is, the hardware is way more powerful than most people need. Unless you are trying to keep up with the new games, that always use more and more resources, the same 1 ghz processor of a few years ago is still good to surf the web. Only thing is it's hard to find one that slow anymore. Refurbished deals are also good. When they get refurbished if there is any problem with part of a component, they replace the whole thing. Most often the only original piece is the case.
uBid is a place I've bought from before. They normally get these clearance and refurbished pieces. Some are auctions, some are buy it now. Here is the category I would look at.
http://www.ubid.com/computers/desktop-computers/2.3ghz-to-2.9ghz/
You'll notice on that list the Dell Optiplex. I'd stay away from all Dell, but that's just a personal preference. That model though is a paper weight. There's a reason they're only $60. Stay far any from any Optiplex.
That category machine will give you a relatively new computer that will have easy compatability, be screaming fast and not cost a bunch of money. RAM is cheap, so when looking don't worry about how much comes with it. You can always upgrade. For that I buy from http://www.4allmemory.com/ They have a tool where you pop in your computer specs and it tells you which RAM is guaranteed to work.
New Egg also has good deals.
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=10&name=Desktop-PCs
Most of their stuff is new model, so to get the same price you need to move down the ladder a bit. In the same $400-$500 range you'll see things like Acer, HP Compaq, Gateway, etc. Again, I'd go with the HP Compaq. It's still an HP, just originally from Compaq design. Kind of like how Remington bought the Charles Daily mauser.
The other good thing about NewEgg are the reviews. Lots of geeks go there, so if something has a bunch of reviews and good marks, it's normally good. Any glaring problems will come out.
For a monitor, LCD flatscreen is the only way to go. For those I have no preference on brand. I just poke around with the list of ones that have the specs I want and read reviews until I find a good one for a good price.
Specific buys:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107560 - Comes with XP. Max out the RAM and stick a monitor on it and you're done.
----------
As for the OS, you can do everything on Linux, but if you're more comfortable with XP and don't want to try something new then stick with it. I find XP terribly annoying and bloated, but it does work... most of the time. Just turn off all the automatic updates and other "helpful features".

If you are interested in Linux, here are the 3 I'd suggest.
Ubuntu
Kubuntu
PCLinuxOS
They're all free to download and use. Standard Ubuntu is the best documented. Here's some good reading on it.
Unlike the days of yore when there was little to no documentation and you had to hand compile a Linux distro now you just click a few buttons and most everything is configured automatically.
