getting the neighborhood sheep
      #1893584 - Thu Jul 03 2008 09:14 AM

I am on ten acres and had ten sheep and now I have eight. The neighbor lost two and then another neighbor lost one; all within 10 days. I saw the coyote this AM just before I fed the sheep which are corraled up next to my hay storage. They were making a fuss waiting to be fed and I think that's what got this coyote coming. I was getting ready to leave for work and got a 22 mag, open peep sights, after I saw him about 250 yds away. Got back out and he was closer in a field of what I call mustard which was just tall enough to cover him. I was barely able to track him as he loped from right to left and I took a shot and missed. He was probably about 80 yds away almost quartering away at a lope. I was using my neighbor's rifle. All the stuff I have is too big from my pig hunting days to shoot around my place with neighbors and homes that are as close as about 300 yds. I only need a 150 to 200 yd rifle so I bought a Savage Model 40 22 Hornet with a Tasco 6 x 24 - 42 Mil Dot that I will be picking up on the 9th. So anyway I am going to make the e-caller with the radio shack stuff and figured that I'd put sheep distress sounds and sheep vocalizations on a CD and started searching for MP3 files and I can find practically nothing for sheep sounds. Can anyone lead me to some sheep audio files?

Also, the county Ag Dept. hunter guy who has been a big help told me just now that I should lay low and not do too much calling for a while so the coyote can feel safe again roaming our property. Then, after about a week or two, try calling again to see if I can get him to come in. He also told me, and I knew this, but just forgot to do it, that I may have been able to stop him for my shot by giving him a few barks. That might have stopped him and I wouldn't have to take the shot with him running.

Anyway, this is nothing like shooting pigs! Thanks - Denny from Sebastopol, CA

Update:

Got the rifle and it does fine. I need some work, but I can get groups under an inch at 100 yds with Winchester 46g HP. Even the cheap scope is okay, but I'd rather have a Mueller on it. Painted it, added a sling and built a stick out of an old shovel handle and some goat skin with the fur still on; magnets on the bottom so it doesn't slap around. Been out hunting twice and seen a coyote one more time Sunday AM when I was standing on my side porch waiting for the county guy to come over and call on our property. The county guy never showed cause he got called out to go chase a mountain lion with some dogs up north. Anyway, the coyote was coming down the neighbor's driveway and I couldn't get a shot even though he was coming my way. He was moving around too much and finally ended up in some tall grass about 150 ft away and from there I lost him. It was about 5:50 AM. I still have no idea how he got out of that grass without me seeing him. I need to practice getting a good shot off quicker - I was told about 4 to 5 seconds on another forum. Still haven't made the e-caller and got some diaphragm calls so I am practicing with those for now. Gonna get some #4 buck for my long barreled Rem 870 and then I'll have them both by the door. Got some neighboring property and some other spots within a few miles where I can hunt so I may have some luck soon if I stay on it. Best regards - Denny from Sebastopol, CA

I wouldn't worry so much about producing sheep sounds. You already have those. Any distress sound will do. Coyotes don't care what they eat, they just want food.

If you are tootling away at home during your practice you are probably educating those coyotes up to PhD post graduate level.

I read the 'Read This' thing; let me know what I missed. Thanks for the advice on the sheep audio files.

True, I'm not, but I would if I had critters getting killed I would. All I have are these damned outlaws and so far everything that has tried to eat them has gotten the tables turned on it. At least that's their story. "It was self defense".

Dave

Isaiah is getting along just fine. He has just about tamed the wife, but is having a hell of a time with my springer spaniel. Sweetpea keeps on beating him up and taking his squeaky toys (live rabbits) away.
Cheers
Drac
