I think I got a shooter
      #1893097 - Wed May 14 2008 07:40 AM

I finally ended up getting my Savage 110V rebarreled. Matt Salm come up with a Brux barrel in stainless with a 14 twist. I wanted a tractor axel and this certainly fit the bill; finished at a little over 26" with a .875" muzzle dia.

So I traveled up to see Matt's new shop a couple weeks ago and, of course, have him chamber and install my new barrel. He also lopped a few more inches off of Jimmy's CZ527 he just got from Moondog. We shortened Jimmy's 10/22 barrel up to just behind the front site too.

Back to the Savage, Matt ditched the barrel nut, surface ground the recoil lug and trued the receiver face; then meticulously threaded, chambered, crowned and polished that Brux barrel. Everything he did was "dead nuts" on the money.

I had him open the barrel channel and rebed the recoil too.

Well, lastnight the wind finally calmed and I got a chance to shoot it from the bench. After a quick break in, I shot my first 3 shot group with the 6th, 7th and 8th shots from the new barrel.

Drum roll please, the first three shot group at 100 yards went 0.141" center to center. By then it was nearly dark and I needed to clean the barrel so I quit. The ammo was nothing special, just some AA2200 and 50gr Ballistic Tips that I’d loaded a couple years ago.

We’ll see how she works with 5 shot groups next time and possibly some fine tuned ammo.

Bottom line, Matt Salm does fine work and I have a rifle with good potential.

Chris

Excellent! Always nice when something works out the way it's supposed to.

And we could sure use a decent gunsmith around here who isn't working 18 mos. out.

I think he's working 18 hours out but if word gets out about the rifles he's put together so far, his work load my get a bit heavier.

Mike,
The biggest setback I have is sourcing components. As soon as I get everything together for a project, I MAKE time to get it done within a week, two at most...that's for the metalwork. If it's stockwork above and beyond a simple pillarbedding/free-float I can procrastinate with the best of them!

Shoot straight, shoot often

OK Matt; that's the right answer.

I can screw up my own stocks with the best of them; it's that metal turning sorcery that has me baffled.

I just sent you a PM. I don't have your email address.

Confirmed, I do have a shooter. I ran six different loads, five shots each, through the other day and came up with an average group size of 0.401". That includes some self proclaimed pulled shots too. I haven't even played with seating depth yet and probably wont as it really doesn't matter if I can squeeze another hundreth out of her.

Hurry up and get that FFL Matt.

Chris
