FoxPro Scorpion
      #1891959 - Thu Feb 14 2008 06:34 PM

The UPS fella brought me my FoxPro Scorpion this afternoon. I've only played with it for a few hours, but I figured I'd write something just for the hell of it.

Pretty small unit as described on their website. Doesn't lack much in terms of volume though. I had it on half and could hear it over the howling winds 40 yards away. The remote is probably the best part. Trying to select sounds on that little screen is tough, but with 4 preset buttons I don't think it will matter. I'll probably try and reorder the sounds on there at some point and trim the list to those I'll use most often. Since 100 sounds come with it I put everything from deer to ducks on the list.

The only downside I can really forsee at this point is that it just flat won't work without a remote. Unlike the FX3/FX5, no remote means no call with this one. There aren't any controls on the unit itself. Everything, including turning the call on and off, is done via the remote.

The case looks like a Pelican case, but on the bottom it says it's made by Otter Box. Model 2000 specifically. I've never heard of them. Their boxes are supposed to be waterproof and even float, but my guess is with the holes drilled for the speaker and such that all goes out the window.

I'll put it up next to Brent's FX3 this weekend and see if the sound is really the same. Now I just need to put on a decent carry strap and get some good batteries.

From what I see in your pic and what I hear about the Scorpion it's a hum dinger. I don't foresee selling my FX3 and getting a Scorpion in the foreseeable future tho.

Hello... new guy here.. been readin and lurking for a while.. The Scorp, is a cool lil caller, the Amp is the same as the one in the FX5, when coupled with an external speaker, its really got plenty of volumne. The "remote" was the reason i recently purchased the FX5 though.. I figured when I dropped/lost the remote/forgot a battery/ at least Id still be able to use the caller.. For ease of portability, and toughness the Scorp, is hard to Beat !

You can upgrade from the FX3 to FX5 for $200. Check the FoxPro site for details. It's a remote upgrade as the units are the same. There might be others, but the biggest features of the new remote are the 4 presets (both sound and volume) and a scrolling list with titles so you actually know what sound is what. There are other things like timers and extra speaker controls, but those are the big ones.

Not quite, it does have an on/off switch inside if you look. But you can't pick any sounds without the remote.

So.... Mark, when do we get the 'report' on your comparing your Scorpion to Brent's FX3.
I am really interested in your thoughts as....
I am saving my nickels
and saving my dimes,
waiting on the time,
when I can buy (myself a scorpion or FX5) mine.

Sorry about that. Forgot last time I had it over at Brent's. Hopefully I'll get some time this weekend and trundle over with it.

It's not just a matter of remembering, it's a matter of remembering at the right time.

NcWhitetail,

Took the Scorpion out on a couple stands today. Just working dogs and taking pictures. Anyway, got a better sense of the volume under real conditions. It's not as loud as the big speaker on the FX3/FX5, but the same as if you used the mylar speaker. It's certainly loud enough.

After playing with it more my take is that if I had an FX3 I'd spend the $200 for the upgrade to get the FX5. Same call, but the remote has nice features and I think it's worth it. If I didn't already have one I'd get the Scorpion as it's less than the FX5 and is really same call minus the horn speaker. It's hard to quantify volume with words, but if you tend to run whatever call you're using now at full volume and wish it had more, then you'll likely think the Scorpion isn't loud enough and would prefer the FX5.

The call is definitely good, but the remote makes it great. Which would make me look over the FX3.

Thanks a bunch Mark. Your thoughs are similar to mine.
A scorpion for the normal days. Add a SP-55 speaker for the few occasions when more volume is necessary. Such as crow hunting.
The scorpion is a nice, compact, light weight package with enough volume for most applications, a great remote and plenty of room for lots of sounds. It, along with a SP-55 speaker is less expensive than a FX-5 and comes with an additional 50 sounds.
Soo... I think it may well be the best option for me.
Thanks again,
Don
