Rondy Updates

Could some of you local fellers down there give some Rondy updates for those of us less fortunate working stiffs? Pics? Stories of hunting or who puked first?

Cmon guys, share the love.

Re: Rondy Updates

Hi Andy,

This one seems to be about serious calling and killing.

Mike Harter killed a nice bobcat yesterday and so did a friend of Brent Parkers who went out with Brent and Randy.

The Stipeks went North and took two coyotes, Brent and Randy got two coyotes, Kev and Disco got one.

They are all up and out early this morning so I'll update you tonight and see if anyone has pictures to post.

Re: Rondy Updates

Lots of coyotes as predicted this year, right here in the valley.

Brent called in 10 today with only one hitting the dirt.

Stipeks and Wayne Meyer went back North again and brought two home. John shot both of them.

Mike and Fotohunt (Darrell Butts) were successful with Darrell taking his first called coyote.

Cat went horseback with John-Henry but called it short when he jammed a bullet in the lands and it came apart on extraction. Powder in the action and all that.

Disco called a bunch but coulcn't connect fot the kill.

Lots of fur going into the freezer.

Social hours are somewnat subdued vis a vis prior yeats but its only Tuesday.

Wish you were here.

Don

I wish I was there. Dam cold and snowy in western Ia. If I would have made it on time probably would of delivered the plague. Sick on Sunday and missed work on Monday. Coming around today. Made a couple stands Sunday morning with no luck. Appeared that any culvert with no water running in it had fresh coyote track leading into it. I have a feeling they are spending the days in the tube and carousing at night.

Well good luck and put a few more on the ground!

Re: Rondy Updates

I don't know what else happened, but the Dawg's brakes went out on us yesterday. After driving about 25 miles with no brakes to get back to his place, and giving him a ride back home from the mechanic's place, I stopped by Brent's before heading home.

Brent had two laying in the yard, and was headed to the Playa somewhere to try to call a cat. I left him a box of ammo that he asked me to spare him, and wished him well.

Today, I'm trying to fix a chainsaw so that I can cut the mesquite brush from a fenceline.

Wish I was over there hunting again...

Daryl

Can anybody hunting with Brent Parker tell me if he picked up the Sako #78 .22 Hornet I sent to him? I have heard nothing from him at all. If he got it, does he like it? Has he shot it? Does his feed from the magazine? My rifle, which I bought in October, does not. Nor does the other new #78 I sent to Michigan. Tell him receipts are on the way. Thanks.

Re: Rondy Updates

Brent did in fact pick up the Sako. Not only that, but he scoped it, sighted it, and loaned it to a buddy of ours who used it to take a very nice bobcat a couple of days ago.

They ain't for looking at around here; mostly they're used to kill stuff.

And I don't know if it feeds or not; the cat succumbed to a single round behind the shoulder that didn't exit.

Only during the Rondy, Norm. The rest of the time, everything's fine.

Even during the Rondy, the Dawg always seems to get the worst of it.

Although I did get a little grungy while dismembering his truck to see what the problem was. No worse than others at the Rondy though, I'd think.

All in a day's adventure.

Re: Rondy Updates

Hey,

Sorry for the missing days.

This is a record year for coyotes and bobcats.

Dan got a really beautiful female cat this morning. It was big for this area at around 23 lbs and looked even bigger.
Biggest blackest spots we've seen down here. Beautiful animal. He's getting a rug made with it.

Kev the Bassman scored today on his second coyote of the Rondy and so did Wayne Meyer.

Randy called 9 coyotes today, I didn't hear how many he killed.

Brent Parker killed another today and has been doing a great job taking folks out and putting coyotes in front of them.

Many thanks to Vic Carlson who took out some of our newer members and really showed them some coyotes.

John-Henry took some on a horseback coyote hunt but Ken got stymied by a bullet that pulled out in the chamber and spilled a case of powder in his action.

There is a lot of fur on the pole, tons of rifles, revolvers, knives and parts changed hands here this week.

I expect some to post with details of their hunts after they get back home and I'll post any pictures that were taken if they forward a copy to me. Or, they can post their own.

We had a great time, everyone hunted hard and there was a ton of coyotes out there this year.

Yeah Norm,

I hear you. I too dedicated 46 years of my life bringing reality to someone elses whims and desires.

These past two years of my retirement have been the freest and happiest of my life. I can never understand those who retire and then go back to a rigidly structured occupation because "I couldn't stand being at home all day with nothing to do". I'm never at a loss and I love the freedom.

Well I've given you bare bones so the liars, er, storytellers can add the flesh and detail. We all need to hound them about it and the pictures.

Dan and John just left for St. Louis, and we miss them already. (I got to look at that beautiful cat of Dans again in the daylight. And what a beautiful one it is.)

This really sucks being home during Rondy time. I sure did miss seeing everyone.

I dont know if my situation is going to get better or worse. My partner is talking retirement, like in the next month. If he does, it will be all on me. I dont know if Ill get to go anywhere til I can find someone to help out with the business end.

Here is a pic of the cat. It was a little bigger than I thought, (how often do you hear that line ). It came in at 25.5 lbs on John's digital scale.

My biggest to date. This picture really doesn't do it justice.

Re: Rondy Updates

The drunkenness was light this year. That in combination with some population booms after the parvo, we stacked a bunch and called a hell of a lot more. I'd guess the ratios were about 1 coyote killed for every 5 called in. Big difference from those years of 'drought'.

The Rondy still had it's moments after the sun went down and the bullshit started to pile up. Rats were drank, stories were told, and we all got to see fotohunt's spider bite and subsequently wished we hadn't.

Daryl and Don hunted together and the only thing that had to go to the hospital was Don's truck. Some kind of miracle.

Andy, you need to quit chasing felons next year and get down here. Hell, you can probably pick up 3 or 4 while you're here and write the trip off as a business expense.

From the few photos here, it looks as if while you were drinking at night someone snuck in and stole all your trees. I supose a chainsaw repairman would starve to death in that area.

Unless you count mesquite as a tree, I think I could count the number of trees I saw on one hand.

Re: Rondy Updates

I saw a really fancy, absolutely beautiful Winchester #70 custom .220 Swift once that had a stock of mesquite wood. I didn't know the stuff could grow straight and long enough to make a gunstock.

If there are no trees to hide behind, how do all the illegal aliens sneak into this country around that area?

Bruce:

Believe me, there are plenty of places to hide in the desert if you know how to do it, particularly at night.

And mesquite will form trees quite large if given enough water. There's a grove of beauties off the Geronimo Trail.

Weatherby used to feature "screwbean mesquite" as one of its stock choices in the '50s and early '60s. Beautiful stuff. I haven't seen one of those stocks in years.

Re: Rondy Updates

Mike, we can get you some of the mesquite if'n you want to carve ya out one of those stocks???

So it sounds like a lot a callin took place, a few more than normal coyotes responded, but poor shot placements enabled many of those responders to live for another day...

hopefully they will mate well and generate more responders for next year's crop...

No thanks Norm:

I haven't got enough time left for it to dry properly.

As for those coyotes, close, thick cover results in a lot of coyotes called and fewer killed.

or get one of them there AR type rifles.... 5 shots in the same amount of time you get one shotgun blast off....

Mike, some of those bulldozer piles would have some mesquite already dried for you... you would NOT have to wait to start carving away...
