Fireforming 17rfb from 17-223 brass
|
In a previous issue of "precision shooter" I read that 17-223 or 17 M4 brass can be used in a 17rfb. I have about 30pcs of 17-223 ready to load.
I have read all about using bullseye and wheat and wax plugs
which sounds like a giant waste of time
others have said load'em and shoot'em?? just what exactly does that mean
I assume that I should use a starting load of the fastest burning powder listed for the 17rfb
what are your recommendations??

17-223 is longer by a large amount than 17 Mach IV or 17 Fireball.

For example, If you have a 223 or a 22 Hornet rechambered to a 223 Improved or a 22KHornet. Then the gunsmith sets the headspace so that you can fire factory ammo in it and it will fireform to the new chamber. You can reload 223 and also fire it to fireform to the new chamber dimentions. Or when making 17 Mach IV brass from 221 fireball brass. That is where "just load them and shoot them" comes from.

I now realize that
the guy that gave me the brass called it 17-223 in reality it is 17mach !V, formed from 221 fireball brass
holding the two side by side i can see that the shoulder angle is a bit different .
the 17fb being a little longer and steeper in the shoulder and a little longer in the neck.
I will load five or so and let'em rip and let you know how it goes

I hope you have good insurance, in fact, you better check first and see if they cover things like glass eyes, and chunks of metal in the brain.
Seriously, throw the brass away and shoot factory ammo until you have enough reloadable brass for your rife or Remington starts selling 17 FB brass.
headspace is not something to play with unless you know what you are doing. It's not worth it for 30 pieces of brass.

If someone gave me MachIV brass and called it it .17-223 I would toss it in the trash. I wouldn't shoot it in my MachIV and certainly wouldn't shoot it in a 17 fireball.
I'm somewhat cautious when it comes to high pressures, fire and flying metal next to my face.

You read wrong.''.17-223 won't even come close to chambering in a mach IV or fire ball. In fact, I don't think it would chamber in a .17 rem. The shoulder is too far forward.

This brings up a good point. There can be flaws in any article written by man, even those in Precision Shooter. So always double check articles to make sure that load weights, cartridge designations and other things are according to hoyle BEFORE reloading any ammo.

My guess is, the article in PS read .17-221 or .17 MachIV, which the reader mistakenly read as .17-223 or .17 MachIV. At any rate, .17 Fireball brass is now readily available (Just took delivery of 300 cases from Midway), so that's the route I'd suggest he take.
I also don't believe it's a good idea to "load her up and let her rip", as too much bad $#@! can happen!
