17-223 is longer by a large amount than 17 Mach IV or 17 Fireball.

For example, If you have a 223 or a 22 Hornet rechambered to a 223 Improved or a 22KHornet. Then the gunsmith sets the headspace so that you can fire factory ammo in it and it will fireform to the new chamber. You can reload 223 and also fire it to fireform to the new chamber dimentions. Or when making 17 Mach IV brass from 221 fireball brass. That is where "just load them and shoot them" comes from.
