pack hunting? something on the table?

Hello all,
I have always heard that the coyote was a lone hunter. The other night on my stand around 7pm the usual set of howls while they gathered occured. I started my call. Cat in distress. I pulled in 3 the other night with the cat. This time nothing came in. About 10 minuttes I heard a pretty serious set of barks and a challenge call. Five minuttes later the local fire alarm blew and the whole pack of them had moved toward the challenge. This confused me. Yesterday I took the 4wheeler out and the gps. 127 yards behind me is where they gathered. 780 yards south of me was a dead deer torn apart. Only thing left were a few bones and alot of hair. I live in upstate ny and see coyotes together and never alone. I found a track yesterday that messured 3-3/4 in. long and 2 in. wide. I will try and post a picture. Does anybody know if this is a coyote or some breed of wolf?
