I am looking into buying a used Remington 700 17 rem rifle that was put together buy someone else and then traded-in. There is no information about the rifle other than the blued 700 action, synthetic stock and a 24" ss barrel with 17 rem marked on it. The rifle looks brand new and I was told there are only 10 rounds thru it. Should I pass on the rifle? I'd like to hear everyones thoughts.

Riemer,
The only reasons ANYONE should ever get rid of a .17 rifle is:
1. To get a better one 2. Because it doesn't shoot good 3. Well, There is no #3
Seriously, How much is it?
That would help me help you.

Thoughts:
Price- Minus any representation on accuracy, it's worth the parts and barrel fitting cost; action + barrel + fitting labor (if it shoots) + stock + trigger assembly + bolt assembly...
Most with practical sense & willingness can remedy a sub-par shooter with little investment (excluding your own time--- but the education should be worthwhile).
If accuracy is poor and uncorrectable, its still worth the parts. Can always hire a barrel reamed and re-cal'd @ $100 or so. Just won't be a .17 again, or re-barrel with .17 Rem.
Your 'leap' is all in the purchase price. Parts are worth $400 up depending on barrel make & quality.
Questions I'd ask:
What is or is not new (or appears to be, or not)?... from the bolt to the trigger to the action...
What barrel make?
Usually ask who fit/spaced the barrel work but likely unkown to 2nd party seller.

We still don't know what the seller is asking for it.

Just an update. After having the gun here and looking it over, it became obvious that several things were not right! First the bolt did not fit the action correctly and it was headspaced wrong. The bottom line. Don't buy someone elses custom (from a dealer that can only "claim") that it was put toghter right. HE could provide me with the previous owners information even though he claimed it was his personal friend. The gun is on its way back hopefully he will refund my money as he told me he would do over the phone.

You paid for your education. Not a bad deal.
Be happy to help again. Will let you know if I see anything interesting.
